Joliette is a Canadian city in Quebec, capital of the Joliette Regional County Municipality (RCM), in the Lanaudière region. It is the sixth largest city in Lanaudière.
Barthélemy Joliette named the area L'Industrie because he wanted to make the village a major industrial center. When it was incorporated in 1864, the new town took the name Joliette in recognition of its founder's work. It became a city in 1918, merged with Joliette-Sud in 1966, which was created in 1957, and received its current city status in 1981.
The city of Joliette is located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands. The climatic conditions of the St. Lawrence Plain have several impacts on the population. The average annual temperature is 5°C, which means a longer growing season than in other regions. The L'Assomption River winds through the city from north to south.
